They do an okay job at storytelling, not wonderful. And your 2nd and 3rd point are the same things. The movies are fun, but let's not put them on a pedestal that they don't deserve. They aren't the same thing at all. A character can change so much that their original character is unidentifiable. However, when he realizes the government doesn't do the right thing, he becomes a lawless vigilante, but still remaining true to his core "do the right thing" moral code. Characters are supposed to change, but not so much that they are unidentifiable from their original forms, hence 'staying true to themselves.' Saying they're just "dumb fun" does nothing but show that you don't pay attention.
