For my furever friend, he was scratching my wife and my son to the point of neither of them enjoying him. I put up with the cuts in an attempt to bond, but he was a playful cat with scratch habits. My wife (a groomer) was completely against declawing until she had enough of the scratches and refused to give him up. I talked to my vet who talked me out of the pricier laser procedure, stating that it is harder for them to heal since the laser pseudo cauterizes the wound before it has a chance to close. (she persuaded me to do the less expensive, higher success rate method) My cat was running around 24 hours after surgery, used a paper shreddings litter box for a week and the only change we noticed was a sweeter cat. He is now a staple in the home and we fight over who gets to lay with him at night. Highly recommend as a last resort. We tried the false nails you glue on, but he was persistent in removing them as quickly as possible.
